There is something so humble and immediate about scent –
so ordinary that it is in everything we do, that we can even hardly notice it,
so innate and unmistakable that it only takes a breath,
before you are sure that something has happened within you,
that you feel a certain way,
that you have been carried to a different time, place, dimension,
that you have somehow found or remembered a part of you that has unmistakably been with you all along and yet undoubtedly only just, or again, appeared.
Scent reaches and finds emotion and memory before thought,
before and when nothing else can.
Perhaps they are larks flitting and weaving throughout and between our soul, mind, and whatever makes us who we are, dancing and singing wherever within us and our story they may be,
and who, at a call from the present, through the olfactory – a breeze of jasmine freshly bloomed on the tree we just passed and returned for, a worn out leather jacket of a woman we bumped into, a hint of rain on gravel and dirt,
fly through
time,
space,
and history
to wherever we may be, carrying everything we need on their wings.
Or perhaps – when a scent enters the nose, odor molecules bind with receptors and fire electrical signals straight to the olfactory bulb,
before travelling to the amygdala (the part of the brain involved in generating emotion) and the hippocampus (the part of the brain which stores and organises memories),
bypassing the brain’s usual “relay station” that other sense use – so our olfactory senses has direct access to the heart of what we feel and remember.
Scent is woven into identity.
Each of us carries an invisible collection of smells that belong only to our experience – these scents become markers of who we are, quietly shaping what feels familiar, comforting, or unsettling.
The most intimate expression and connection, and the deepest and most instinctual understanding of yourself and others.
